Fray Arnaldo Marcolino Maas Stained Glass Panel

$8,750.00

A luminous and intricately detailed stained-glass composition depicting Christ Calming the Storm, drawn from the Gospel of Matthew 8:25. Rendered in vibrant reds, deep blues, and golden yellows, Maas’ interpretation captures both the spiritual tension and serene faith of the biblical moment. The lower inscription, “SALVA NOS DNE PERIMUS,” meaning “Save us, Lord, we perish,” is skillfully integrated into the design using fired vitreous paint and silver stain, producing a radiant, layered effect under natural light.

The figures—Christ sleeping in repose, his disciples in distress—are composed with modernist abstraction reminiscent of mid-century ecclesiastical art.

The panel’s rhythmic waves and linear geometry evoke both movement and divine order, a signature of Maas’ unique synthesis of Caribbean color sensibility and sacred iconography. The artist’s etched signature, “Hno. Marcolino Maas,” (short for Hermano Marcolino Maas) appears clearly along the right edge, visible under ultraviolet light and confirming authorship.

PROVIDENCE: This stained-glass panel originates from a private U.S. collection and was acquired directly from a close acquaintance of Brother Arnaldo “Marcolino” Maas during the artist’s active period in Puerto Rico, circa late 1950s. The acquaintance had befriended Maas during his years of ecclesiastical art production and received multiple works from him. The present panel has remained in family ownership since its original acquisition and is now offered publicly for the first time.
